Renowned worlwide

Japanese culture has global popularity. In Japan, creative industries are linked to lifestyle and culture and include film/animation, games, music, design, fashion, tourism, artisan products, and food. To boost Japan’s creative industries, the Cool Japan Fund has been set up by the government to provide investments and loans to creative enterprises and projects.

Setting the trend

Japan’s gaming industry is one of the most prominent in the world, with major domestic companies such as Nintendo, Sony and Bandai Namco dominating the Japanese market. The gaming population in Japan is increasingly growing, boosted by Covid-19, with 75 million players in 2021. More than the mobile gaming market, cloud gaming is rapidly expanding in Japan.

Appetite for apparel

Japan is one of the world’s largest fashion apparel importers and considered a trendsetter for other countries in Asia. Its clothing and textile market is stable, but competitive, also since consumer spending has decreased in the past years. While fast fashion chains such as UNIQLO and Muji are flourishing in Japan, consumers value high-end fashion products, seeking fashion with higher quality. Besides quality, primary purchase drivers are comfort and fit. While specialty stores and department stores are still the primary channel for apparel sales, the e-commerce channel emerged and grew significantly since the pandemic. Since recent years, there is more awareness about sustainability and human rights in the apparel supply chains, though Japan is still behind compared to Western countries.

Putting Dutch strengths to the forefront

Dutch creatives could contribute to the creative industry in Japan as they are known for putting innovative (digital) technologies and sustainability to the forefront in their projects, especially in the fashion and apparel industry. Moreover, Dutch creatives have expertise in creating links with other sectors and providing solutions to societal challenges such as health, security, and energy. Besides being known because of famous painters, the Netherlands has a solid reputation when it comes to electronic dance music, architecture, design, new media and gaming. Regarding gaming, the Netherlands is known as a strong player in the field of serious games as well as indie games.
